There is still information today that can only be found in books, whether historical data or specific content. The information stored in this format limits its use, as it often requires in-person consultation and, in some cases, due to preservation constraints, it is hardly accessible.
As a result, valuable historical content, research and relevant information can become difficult to access. To prevent this and make information accessible to everyone, a book digitisation process is required.
What does the book digitisation process involve?
The digitisation process consists of converting books from a physical format into a digital format. This allows them to be accessed from any device whenever needed, without damaging the original document.
Digitisation is the solution for preserving and facilitating access to unique documents such as books, creating digital versions that ensure their availability. There are two main ways to digitise books.
One is automated digitisation, where each page is scanned automatically. As a result, the original book is usually unbound and cut to carry out the process. The other method is page-by-page digitisation while preserving the book, ensuring that its integrity is maintained and that high-quality results are achieved.
Currently, each page is photographed, as traditional scanning, in addition to being slower, can also affect the condition of the original document.
What is OCR?
OCR (Optical Character Recognition) is a technology that enables different types of documents—PDF files, scanned papers or images—to be converted into editable and searchable data.
To use it, the book must first be scanned and then processed through this software. This method is not entirely exact, as it compares the captured characters with predefined patterns stored in a database. Its performance largely depends on the quality and resolution of the digitised file.
