Floor stand: attracting attention at the point of sale

floor stand retail display

A floor stand is a highly effective marketing resource for the point of sale. It provides visibility, brand awareness and reinforces brand image, while also encouraging impulse purchases. As a result, it delivers very positive outcomes in retail environments and trade shows.

What is a floor stand?

In simple terms, a floor stand is a freestanding display unit typically placed in high-traffic areas. It is an effective POS materials (POSM) tool because, in addition to communicating messages, it allows products to be displayed and highlighted outside standard shelving. This makes your products more visible and appealing.

When configuring these displays, it is important to clearly define their characteristics and intended use. There are two main types:

  • Displays delivered flat-packed and assembled at the destination.
  • Displays transported fully assembled. In this case, some are shipped loaded with products, while others require products to be placed once on site.

One of the key factors to consider when designing these displays is how long they will be used:

  • For short-term campaigns, more economical and lightweight materials such as cardboard are recommended.
  • For permanent campaigns, plastic, wood or metal provide the required durability.

Types of floor stands

Advances in conventional and large-format printing now allow for increasingly innovative and customised solutions. A first classification can be made as follows:

  • Standard
Produced in series with fixed dimensions, formats and features. Customisation is possible by adding graphic elements such as printed panels or self-adhesive vinyl.
  • Customised
The client defines specific requirements and a specialised provider develops the solution accordingly. While costs may be higher, the result is fully adapted to your business needs, including both structural design and graphics.
  • Hybrid
Typically based on modular or semi-standard structures, with the option to customise certain features.

Design and dimensions are highly flexible. Options include circular formats, modular structures (made up of independent units combined as needed), rotating or extendable displays, with lighting and different shelf configurations.

By material

Another relevant classification is based on the materials used: Cardboard is one of the most popular options due to its versatility. It is economical, lightweight, relatively sustainable and ideal for short-term campaigns. It is also easy to customise and practical, as it can be delivered flat and quickly assembled.

Wood floor stands are functional and offer an affordable option, while conveying a carefully crafted image. They are commonly used for installations or longer-term promotional campaigns.

Other options include metal (more expensive and complex to transport, typically used for permanent installations) and thermoformed plastic (a fast and cost-effective production option, though with a less favourable impact on sustainability).

Finally, hybrid displays combine several materials to leverage their advantages and offset limitations. By working with the right partner, you can achieve the exact floor stand your business requires.
