Self-adhesive vinyl adds colour and transforms spaces. It is widely used in retail environments, offices and interiors. Today, it is an effective decorative solution, allowing your business to quickly change the look and feel of a space. Below, we explain how to install self-adhesive vinyl correctly.
What is self-adhesive vinyl?
As explained in our article on sustainable vinyl solutions, self-adhesive vinyl is a material composed of three layers: the PVC print layer (where the design is printed), the adhesive layer (which ensures adhesion to the surface), and the backing liner (silicone release paper that protects the adhesive until application).
Eco-friendly vinyl options are PVC-free and use water-based adhesives, providing a more sustainable alternative.
Applying self-adhesive vinyl
Applying self-adhesive vinyl may seem complex, but by following the right steps, your business can achieve a professional result.
There are two main types of vinyl: printed vinyl and cut vinyl. Printed vinyl is recommended for smooth walls, while cut vinyl is often used for decorative applications on glass. For glass surfaces, it is advisable to use a mixture of water and soap to help position the vinyl correctly.
What do you need?
To begin, you will need a few tools
to facilitate installation:
- Squeegee, to ensure proper adhesion of the vinyl to the surface.
- Clean cloth, to prepare and clean the surface before and after application.
- Measuring tape, to position the vinyl accurately.
Steps to apply self-adhesive vinyl
Once you know where the vinyl will be applied and have all materials ready, you can begin installation:
- Clean the surface where the vinyl will be applied. Use a clean cloth and alcohol for glass surfaces, and a dry cloth for walls.
- Measure and mark the area where the vinyl will be placed, using masking tape as a guide to ensure correct positioning.
- Position the vinyl in its final place and secure it temporarily with masking tape. Fix a strip of tape along the centre from top to bottom.
- Peel back one of the upper corners and slowly remove half of the backing liner. Place the exposed adhesive side onto the surface to prevent it from shifting.
- Apply the vinyl using a squeegee, working from the centre outwards, avoiding air bubbles and wrinkles.
- Remove the masking tape and carefully peel away the remaining backing liner while continuing to apply the vinyl.
- Repeat the process until the entire vinyl is applied evenly across the surface.
