A printed catalogue is a working tool for a company’s sales network. It is a publication used to promote and present a company’s products and services.
Printed catalogues show the full product range and allow the inclusion of high-quality images. Their design is typically lightweight and durable, making them easy to handle and distribute.
Preparing a catalogue for print
Once the final product portfolio file is ready, the next step is to prepare it for printing. Below are some key aspects to consider when preparing a catalogue for print.
Format
Regardless of the design software used, it is recommended to package the project into a single file when sending it to print. The standard format should be PDF. This format embeds fonts, images, colour profiles and all necessary information to ensure the printed result matches expectations.
Colour profile
Another key factor is choosing the correct colour profile. Screens work with RGB colours, while printing uses CMYK (four-colour process). The following guidelines should be followed when preparing artwork before sending a catalogue to print:
- All images must be in CMYK
- Rich black should not exceed values of 30C 30M 30Y 100K to avoid over-inking, which can reduce readability
- Black text should be set to single black: 0C 0M 0Y 100K to ensure sharpness
Bleed and safety margin
For a proper print finish, the document must include bleed and a safety margin. To ensure accurate trimming during binding, a minimum bleed of 3 mm is required.
Bleed ensures a clean edge-to-edge finish, while the safety margin keeps important content within the visible area of the page.
Choosing finishes for catalogue printing
When producing a catalogue or product portfolio, it is important to decide how it will be presented to your clients. In addition to following brand guidelines, the catalogue is often the first impression your business makes, so careful attention should be given to its presentation.
Recommended sizes for catalogues
One of the key aspects to consider is the catalogue format. Common options include:
- A4 and A5 sizes: A4 (210 × 297 mm) and A5 (148 × 210 mm), in both portrait and landscape formats, are cost-effective and optimise paper usage
- 210 × 210 mm format: A more distinctive and elegant option, ideal for catalogues with strong visual content, such as photography or detailed products (e.g. jewellery)
- Custom size: choose the catalogue dimensions that best suit your needs
Paper types for catalogue printing
Selecting the right paper is essential, as it is a tactile element and conveys quality. Below are some recommendations for choosing the best paper for your catalogue:
- Coated paper (gloss or matte): smooth surface that enhances image reproduction. Matte reduces reflections and improves readability, while gloss provides more vibrant image contrast
- Uncoated paper (offset): visible paper texture, offering a natural feel and a more understated image finish
- Recycled paper: made from recycled fibres, suitable for businesses that want to communicate sustainability and environmental responsibility
- Cover paper For the cover, a heavier paper stock can be used, for example 300 gsm. Lamination (protective plastic coating) is recommended to increase durability.
Keep in mind that a catalogue is a frequently used tool that will be handled regularly by your clients.
