Printed cardboard packaging: an eco-friendly alternative

Printed cardboard packaging

Today, cardboard packaging is an excellent eco-friendly alternative to replace other types of packaging. It also demonstrates to consumers that your business is committed to the environment and the sustainable use of resources.

In an increasingly competitive market, choosing the right packaging for your products is essential to stand out and attract customers. Printed cardboard packaging offers a sustainable solution to differentiate your brand.

What is packaging?

Packaging refers to the wrapping, container or outer layer used to present products for sale. When it incorporates your corporate identity, it helps customers quickly associate the product with your business.

Packaging must fulfil at least the following key objectives:

  1. Protect the product
  2. Communicate the brand image

Provide information about the contents (usage instructions, expiry date, ingredients, etc.)

When selecting packaging, it is important to consider its function (whether it is in direct contact with the product or not), the distribution channel (temperature conditions, transport type and handling), and the points of sale.

Distinctive, simple and reusable packaging enhances product value while also serving as an effective promotional tool and a sustainable alternative.

Cardboard packaging

Cardboard is a versatile material that can be shaped into different formats, colours and sizes. It can be easily stored and, depending on its composition and thickness, offers strong resistance to impacts and stacking.

Cardboard boxes provide excellent printability, allowing you to communicate your brand, product information and all required legal details effectively.

Cardboard is recyclable and reusable, making it one of the most sustainable materials available and highly valued in environmentally conscious markets.

Cardboard packaging can be easily sealed using adhesive tape or staples for greater security. Other materials may require less efficient sealing methods.

Which materials can be used for sustainable packaging?

There are various substrates available for packaging production. It is important to consider characteristics such as volume, thickness, finish and even colour.

Below are two of the most commonly used options in packaging projects, although there are many more print production techniques and materials available depending on your needs:

Corrugated cardboard

This is one of the most widely used materials for packaging all types of products, as it provides excellent strength and protection. It is made from multiple layers of paper, including a fluted inner layer that creates a wave structure. The length and shape of the flute can vary to increase resistance, and additional layers can be added for greater strength.

Depending on its structure, corrugated cardboard can be:

  • Single wall: One flat liner and one fluted layer
  • Double wall: A fluted layer covered on both sides by flat liners
  • Triple wall: Formed by combining multiple single-wall structures

Folding carton (paperboard)

Folding carton (paperboard) is a rigid substrate ideal for creating packaging related to product distribution or cosmetics.

It is recommended for products that require more refined packaging with a higher-quality finish. It can be produced in different grammages, increasing its strength.
